My new work investigates the spiritual, historical, and emotional nature of monumentality. I am interested in the certain kinds of spaces and architectural forms that inspire awe, wonder, and reverence. The photographs follow their lineage through the histories of architecture and civilizations.
Many of the structures that I am photographing are American reproductions of ancient monuments, especially those from the Greek and Roman Empires. I see these reproductions and remixes of the ancient monuments simultaneously as a fetishization of “the collapse” and a lust for the eternal.
I have also included images of contemporary and vernacular buildings and spaces. I have found that these spaces exemplify the power, grandeur, and grace of monumentality in a distilled experience.
